Salmon & Willow Lakes

Interstate 70 to Silverthorne/Dillon Exit 205.
Golden Eagle Road approximately 2.0 miles north of I70.

This hike begins on the Eagles Nest Trail in the Eagles Nest subdivision
north of Silverthorne. Take route 9 north out of Silverthorne past
the Willowbrook subdivision on your left. Make a left on Golden Eagle
Road and follow it through a golf course and development of luxurious
mountain homes to Two Cabin Drive. Make a left onto Two Cabin Drive,
as you round a curve you will see a sign "Eagles Nest Trail" on your
left - go to the SECOND sign (on the left) and start your hike here.
There is parking off the road on your right.

Shortly after beginning your hike you cross a wooden bridge and ascend
some steps. About thirty yards or so you'll see a trailboard sign on
your right. Two trails intersect from the left at this point and you
need to take the second one. If you are confused you can walk over to
the map located on the sign to your right (north).

A short walk then brings you to a sign marking the boundary of the
Eagles Nest Wilderness area. After about three quarters of a mile
the Gore Range Trail enters from the left crossing a mountain stream
(there is a trail sign here too - see above right) you stay straight
here and follow the Gore Range Trail until its junction with the
Willow Lakes Trail. This is about 2 and one quarter miles from the
start of the hike.

Follow this trail for another two miles or so while enjoying
the switchbacks and 800' elevation gain to the Salmon Lake Trail
which appears on your right.

A steep ascent of several hundred yards brings you to the spectacular
Salmon Lake at about 11,165'.

Trace your steps back to the trail intersection and sign.
Hang a right there, and follow the trail back to the Willow Lakes area.

You will cross two streams before coming to the first of three
Willow Lakes. If you go to all of the lakes it will add at least
another mile to your hike from Salmon Lake but is well worth it.
Your elevation at the last Willow lake will be approx. 11,390'.

UPDATED DIRECTIONS:

on Ideal Rd (330 Rd) to the first pullout across from the cemetery

road and is an obvious patch of tallish Ponderosa Pines (most of the
habitat on the way south is Piñon-Juniper). I stopped, I believe,

To search for Blackburnian Warbler 5/25/2011:
Maggie Boswell: "There is an path underpass that follows Boulder Creek under Arapahoe
between 33rd and Foothills Parkway. A short distance south of that 3 paths converge
and there is a brick-edged flower planter in the middle of these paths. You can see
the underpass. The bird was visible from the planter area initially. It then moved
up-stream 100-150 yds.

Bruce Webb looked for it later in the morning and eventually found it on the
northwest side of Boulder Creek about 300 yds west of where it was seen initially.
Said one would have to be on the north side of the creek to see it at this point.
It was in a stand-alone cottonwood when they saw it. His impression was that it
was moving back east.

Free, legal parking is available at Scott Carpenter Park on the SW corner of 30th
and Arapahoe. One can pick-up the bike path from the park and head east."

Sedalia to Deckers

Latest: (Allan Miller 9/23):
Sugar creek Road at 0.17 miles south Hwy 67.

One owl Kingery spotted along the Colorado 67, 14.8 miles west of
Sedalia. To try to find this one, follow CO 67 to Sprucewood (13.4 miles
from Sedalia) and take the left fork (Sugar Creek Road). Continue 1.4
miles to an S turn; also 0.4 mile west of the Cook's white mailbox (on
the left; 1002 Colo 67). This one had a normal tail, but at sundown our
silhouetted views didn't show much in the way of field marks. It flew
around just below a logged-over area in a patch outlined by an S curve.

Another Pygmy Owl was seen essentially at the site of Two Forks
Dam--across from the South Platte Hotel where the North Fork of
the South Platte joins the South Fork. This one seemed a bit short
of tail and a bit subdued in back-of-the-head eye spots. And tiny.
A bi-county bird, it flew across the river from Douglas to Jefferson.
Habitat: cottonwoods along the river.

Skunk Canyon

Kohler Mesa Parking and Trail:
From the Boulder Turnpike (Highway 36), take South Boulder Road exit.
Drive West on South Boulder Road, it will turn into Table Mesa Drive.
Continue West past Broadway Blvd, then take next right--Stanford Avenue.

Continue up the hill and down to a stop sign where Kohler Drive
joins Stanford. Continue west on Kohler as far as you can where
it meet Deer Valley. Here you can park near Deer Valley Road & Hollyberry Lane.
There is access to the Skunk Canyon open space here.

Once there are lots of trails going up the canyon. They funnel
together after about 1/2 mile as the canyon closes in a bit. Maybe
another 1/2 mile up, after you go past a clump of trees dominated by
an old cottonwood with lots of dead snags, there is a trail to the south
across the creek and up the bank fairly high on the west side of the
canyon going south. There are only deer trails the rest of the way through
open scrub along the hillside until you get to the copse. It usually takes
me about 1 1/2 hours to get there, but that's because the birding is pretty
good all along the way. At a purposeful pace, you could do it in 30 minutes.

Table Mesa Drive and Trail:
From Hwy. 93 in South Boulder, turn west on Table Mesa Drive.
Follow this until the end of the residential area.
If you get to the big open space, you have gone too far.
Find a place to park (any of the side streets like
Vassar Drive or Emporia Road are fine). The trail starts
on a asphalt path at the edge of the big open space.

To start on Table Mesa Drive, park your car and start hikening on
the asphalt path that hikes northwest at the end of the neighborhood.
You will pass several monsterous houses, and the path will soon change to
gravel and then to dirt. Continue hikening west for approximately .5 miles.

Here you will intersect the trail coming from Kohler Mesa (and the other
optional start on Kohler Drive). Continue west on Skunk Canyon Trail for
another .8 miles until you reach the Mesa Trail. Turn left (south) and
hike approximately .5 miles until you get to another trail junction.
Take the left trail towards NCAR. You will hike back uphill and past
a water tank. Just after the water tank, take a right and follow this
trail all the way to the NCAR parking lot.

Once in the NCAR parking lot, look for a trail that splits off on
the north end of the parking lot (just past a small building).
Take this trail downhill all the way back to your car.
If you started at the Kohler Trailhead, continue hikening on
the asphalt path northwest (past several monsterous houses)
for .5 miles to reach your car.

Chestnut-sided Warbler June 7, 2009; David Waltman:
Take Kohler Mesa Parking and Trail route:
From the trailhead, go straight south, uphill a bit,
to a dirt service road that you take straight west by
the NCAR pump house on the left, and then over a little bridge,
and the Chestnut-sided Warbler was about 50 feet west of that.

(Don’t go to South Cheyenne Canyon and Seven Falls about a mile away) After about a 1/2 mile drive
you will see a big green water storage tank on the hill above you on the right. In just a few
hundred feet there will be a free parking area on the right. Park and walk on the road upstream
until you come to a path that will take you to a footbridge on the left that has short stone walls
(couple hundred yards from parking area). The tanager was seen on both sides of the road and on
both sides of the small stream and almost always very low in bushes in the area of the bridge.
If you see tall Mountain Ashes in the streambed with lots of orange-colored fruits you need to
look mostly upstream from there. Lots of traffic on this narrow road which goes up to Helen Hunt
Falls. PI along the road shoulder in spots too."

Sugar Creek Road

Stevens and Ehlmann have found several Northern Pygmy-Owl in 2010
along Sugar Creek Road (latest: 8/20). They have been found from
0.2 miles south of the intersection with Hwy 67 to the Kingery spot.
