Rabbit Valley

Lucy's Warbler 5/8/2009; Jason Cooper:
"DIRECTIONS: From exit 2 on I-70, head south,
crossing the cattle guard into rabbit valley.
Take the first right to the southwest (should be a wide,
two level dirt road that narrows shortly thereafter).
Stay on this road and turn off on the second road to
the south. This is a rough road on which high clearance
is recommended, as denoted by a sign at the turn off.
This is the last turn before the Rabbit Valley Campground.
Take the road south past a sheep trailer, through a wash,
through a canyon, and stop at the first parking area with
an outhouse. From here, hike down the canyon until you find
a gigantic pothole about ten feet deep with water in the bottom.
About ten feet downstream from here is a small patch of
4-6 cottonwoods, where the bird was found.
This location is .5-1 miles from the parking area.

Ranch At Roaring Fork

Ranch at Roaring Fork is a residential development east of Carbondale.
The location is approx. one mile west of CR100 (Catherine Store Rd.).
The development borders several old gravel ponds that have a great
variety of winter ducks including Barrow’s Goldeneyes on occasion.
The area north of the ponds is a big riparian area that we Roaring Fork
birders visit for the Christmas count and a few other occasions.
Birders are allowed but have been warned by the property management
folks on several visits to mind our manners. Apparently the homeowners
really value their privacy. If you visit this site please be a birding ambassador.

Feb. 16th, 2001, about 2:00 p.m. a N. Pygmy Owl was on the branch of a cottonwood tree

"We saw the bird at the CR 3E at the Rio Grande SWA. We parked in the parking area
on the east side of 3E just south of the bridge. Go through the chain link gate and
follow the trail (which is at this time covered with weeds so it is hard to follow)
east and then north as it curves up to the Rio Grande. Looking west towards the bridge
we saw the bird on a bare branch of a fallen tree that overhangs the south bank of the river.
The black phoebe was kind enough to fly out over the river, then perch long enough for us
to get a good look and take pictures. The phoebe also flew across the river and perched
on willow branches on the north bank. "

David Wade: starting your search at the Colorado Welcome Center located in the southwest corner
at the intersection of I-25 and Prospect Rd. There are parking lots to the south
that provide a nice vista of the area where the hawk has been seen most often.
I have been watching the reports closely and it seems the hawk is moving in
a North to South line between Riverbend Ponds NA to Rigden Reservoir. However,
my impression is it seems to be favoring the trees in the Hagerman's Recycling
Center which can be seen directly West of the Welcome Center. If you don't see
it flying, scan the trees carefully for a dark hawk silhouette. A foot trail
connects from the Welcome Center to Running Deer NA and this also gives
a great panoramic view of hawk's current bailiwick.

Continue south on Highway 11 about a mile until you come to Platte River Drive.

trespass. If you see the COMMON CRANE, please notify the Nebraska
Bird line at 402 292-5325 or by e-mail at lpdlfrd@juno.com.
