Birding Spots of Colorado

(alphabetical)

Hagerman Pass

From the South end of Leadville along Highway 24,
Take McWethy Drive approximately 0.6 miles North to Turquoise Lake Road.
Travel West on Turquoise Lake Road (CR 4)
Turquoise Lake Road changes to Lake County Road 105.
Continue on CR 105 (CR 4, also Hagerman Pass Road) to Summit.
Approximately 14.7 miles from McWethy Road.

To get there from Basalt, Colorado (CO State Highway 82 between Aspen
and Glenwood Springs), head east along the road that follows the
Fryingpan River (Gold Medal Trout Waters). When the pavement ends
about 30 miles east of Basalt, continue around the switch back
to your left (follow the signs to Hagerman Pass).

The road traces an old railroad grade so the climb is not so
steep as to require four-wheel drive however there are several
deep cuts (blind curve), wet areas, rocky areas, and fantastic
drop-offs as you approach the trailhead. About ten miles up
this road and just short of the sign for Ivanhoe Lake look
to your left and you will see a sign for Hagerman Pass.

Continue up the short/steep hill towards Hagerman and within
about 100 yards you will find yourself at the parking area/trailhead
to Lyle Lake/Mormon Lakes. This is also where you will find
the gate to Hagerman Pass.

Hanging Lake

The trailhead can be somewhat tricky to find now that the
Interstate highway bypasses part of the canyon by going
through the Hanging Lake Tunnel.

One can only get to the trailhead when heading eastbound on I-70.
This means that if you are traveling westbound on I-70 you must
actually pass Hanging Lake (while in the tunnel) and exit at the
Grizzly Creek rest area (and trailhead) several miles to the west.

At Grizzly Creek, exit the highway, turn left and immediately turn
left again so that you are now on the on ramp to I-70 eastbound.
Pass the exit to Shoshone and several miles later you will get off
the highway at the exit marked Hanging Lake (just before you would
enter the tunnel -eastbound - if you had not left the highway).
The parking area is well taken care of as it serves a dual purpose
of rest area and trailhead.

Black Swifts best observed very early morning or late afternoon!

"In the city of Durango, behind the Sonic restaurant is a parking area
for the Horse Gulch trail system. This is at the east end of East 3rd St. Once you park
(may want to arrive fairly early as the lot starts to fill quickly) you can walk eastward
up the main trail past the porta-potty. Perhaps 3/4 mile up as the trail flattens out you
come to a meadow opening up on your right. It is just as you are able to split off to the
right that this bird has been located singing in the dead and live treetops on the south
side of the trail (west-most end of the meadow). The trail that runs around the meadow and
also through the center is the meadow loop. If you miss the turnoff to the right you will
encounter a large map to the trail system. You should be able to hear the bird when

Hoy Mountain

From Brown's Park, cross the Swinging Bridge,
make a left at the "T" and drive southeast
for approx. 7.0 miles to Hoy Draw.
(It helps to have a topo map).

To search for Ruff Grouse:
Andrew Spencer:
"the only way to access this area without crossing private property is
to hike in from the north. Budget at least a day to reach the site,
a day to look for the bird, and another day to hike out.
Accessing this site in this manner is definitely not for
the faint of heart, but makes for a truly unforgettable adventure.

To reach the site from the north, hike down the trail at the bottom
of Hoy Draw, over the Diamond Mountain Ridge to Davis Draw, and
then when near the head of Davis Draw hike straight west through
BLM land to the eastern flank of Hoy Mountain. A good map of the area
(preferable the USGS section maps, and an atlas that shows land
ownership boundaries) would be necessary to get this route to work.

Once on the eastern flank of Hoy Mountain there are two places to
look for the bird. When viewed from the east, the peak of Hoy Mountain
appears to be in the middle of the ridge. The spot where the bird
has been seen most recently is a large grove of aspen just to
the south of the peak, above a band of rimrock visible from the east.
To reach the spot, hike up just to the north of the first major drainage
south of the peak.

The other spot to check is north of the peak. To reach it, walk up
the rough track due east of the peak to its end, and then beyond it
to the large aspen grove, which should be visible at that point.

Actually finding the birds can take a great deal of effort, even
after you have reached the groves. The best bet is to cover the
suitable habitat (aspen mixed with conifers, with a dense undergrowth)
thoroughly, and this is best done with a good-sized group.
You will almost certainly see lots of Blue Grouse,
and other species typical of pinyon-juniper and aspen woodland."
