Zimmerman Lake Loop Trail (White winged Crossbills; 3/22/2007):
From Fort Collins take Highway 287 north to the junction with Colorado Highway 14.
Drive west on Hwy 14 for approximately 58 miles. The parking area is on the east
side of the road and approximately 2.25 miles from the summit of Cameron Pass.

is at the start of the trail, the other at the 0.25 mile mark. From the trailhead
use the old road at the south end of the parking lot. The trail heads southeast
and climbs through spruce/fir forest, zigzagging toward the northeast. Around the
halfway mark the trail heads south for several hundred yards then turns northeast
again to the northern edge of Zimmerman Lake. At the Lake you can take a 1.75 mile
Loop Trail around the lake. This trail is relatively flat.

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument

To Search for Lucy's Warblers (5/16/2004):
Courtesy of Tom McConnell:
"Our route was slightly different than what has been posted on the
internet. From The intersection of US160 and County road G (at the
weigh station just south of Cortez) follow CR G west to a gated
BLM road on the right.

Set your odometer to Zero here.  The gate appears to be locked but
is not.  At.9 miles you will pass thru an electric fence and a gate,
the fence is live.  At 1.4 miles cross a cattle guard.  At 2.2 miles
first cross a cattle guard, then cross Moccasin Creek, the take the
left fork off of the main road.

°37'21.511'N 108°55.715'W Elev: 5496'

The road is rough and four-wheel drive is needed.  At 3.4 miles you
will reach another fork in the road overlooking Yellowjacket Canyon.
Park here for the walk down.

°37'21.723N 108°56.986'W Elev: 5505'

Walk down the right hand fork.  You will pass thru a closed gate and
then thru an open gate.  Continue straight ahead from the gate about
50 yards.  The path is well worn and obvious and leads almost
directly to the nest tree.  The birds are feeding young and become
agitated when anyone is around the tree, so remember the rules."

To Search for Lucy's Warblers (5/31/2005) & (4/29/2006):
From Cortez, drive south on Highway 160 to CR G (McElmo Canyon Road).
At Stoplight, turn west on CR G into the Canyon.

The exact location of this area is in Canyon of the Ancients National
Monument, on Yellow Jacket Creek between Moccasin
Canyon and Risley Canyon. To reach the area turn north on the BLM
road off McElmo Canyon Road about 5 miles east of the Ismay Trading
Post (the only major dirt road to the north in this area). The
bottom is gated, but not locked, though it appears to be. The first
mile of this road crosses private land as it climbs to Cannonball
Mesa. After passing through a second gate, continue for
approximately another mile, through the rock formations, to where a
dirt track turns off to the right. The canyon to the north is
Moccasin Canyon. It is possible to hike down the dirt track to
above Yellow Jacket Canyon and then descend the slope, or hike down
Moccasin Canyon to Yellow Jacket Creek. It may also be possible to
drive the road you came in on to Yellow Jacket Creek between
Moccasin and Risley Canyons, but not without a high-clearance vehicle.

The bottom of Yellow Jacket Canyon is a mixture of BLM land and
private inholdings. There is a section of BLM land between Moccasin
and Risley Canyons, but the boundaries are not well marked. Please
avoid trespassing. We found one LUWA along the creek near the
junction with Moccasin Canyon, and heard another farther upstream.
I also saw a likely third bird (not singing) near the junction with
Risley Canyon.

The Delorme Atlas does not show details of this area. We recommend
the Bowdish Canyon Quadrangle topographic map or the Cortez area BLM
map. The hike to Yellow Jacket Creek is about 2 miles each way over
relatively rugged terrain. It is also hot so make sure to take plenty of water.

there is a 20 foot high oak tree with a fir tree behind it.
(At this time, the grasses north of these trees and west of
the trail are squashed down.
(There is a large dead tree falling down the hillside at
rock that splits trail. Several smaller dead trees are
falling down the hillside and pointing to tree mentioned above.

The Prairie Warbler has a nest in the oak tree. Please do not
approach the oak tree. The nest is hidden in the upper eastern
corner of the oak tree and not easy to see. The Prairie Warbler
goes from the nest to the willows east of the trail. She also
goes to the smaller oak trees and fir trees about 50 yards
uphill and west of the trail. We waited 30 minutes for her
to leave the willows and go uphill. Patience will be rewarded.

Chipeta Falls

Fee Area, And the unique thing about this Falls is that to see it,
you have to take a ride in a boat. For more information about it,
you can visit my Morrow Point Boat Tour page; http://www.colorado-hiking-vacations.com/morrow-point-boat-tour.html

From Gunnison, take Highway 50 towards Montrose.
After you pass the Blue Mesa Dam on the far end of the Blue Mesa Reservoir,

Clifton Home

Broad-billed Hummingbird is coming to Bob Myers Home at 576 34 Road, Clifton.
From I-70, take the Clifton exit #37; at the first stoplight go east on F Road,
turn south on 34 Road to 576 on the east side. Please park on the roadside and
walk toward the house w/chain link fence in front. The bird has been coming to
the small strawberry feeder at a window on your left.

Recommend you take a lawn chair and warm clothing or blanket and remain
outside the fence. The BBLH has been very vocal and is the only bird using
the feeder, so shouldn't be hard to find. Listen for the rapid harsh
chit-chit-chit-chit....she looks like a stocky Black-chin female with long
decurved bill, prominent white eyespot/eye line, and broader dusky cheek patch.

Clifton Yard

Steve Bouricius:
"The hummer host (Claudette) has graciously given permission for birders
to access her back yard to see the bird. For those of you who go please
show the utmost consideration by remaining quiet, move slowly, and do
not walk around the house or up the deck stairs. There are some lawn
chairs but you might want to bring your own. The walkway entrance is
icy, so do be careful. Directions: From I-70 take the Clifton exit 37
(I-70B) to the first stoplight. Continue past the intersection and
enter the shopping center to your left, either at the Checker Auto store
or the McDonalds. Find the Albertson's supermarket and go to the alley
behind Albertson's from either direction. The alley zig zags with a
cedar fence opposite the building, go to the area where the rear of the
building is painted in a two tone beige & brown. Enter the back yard
from an old gate just left of a "no trespassing" sign. Claudette's red
Toyota minivan may be parked there. The house is the only two-story in
the row of houses, white with a mansard shake shingle roof, and a
redwood stairway to the second story deck."

To Search for possible Black-chinned Sparrow (5/24/2005):
Jason Beason: "I heard a singing Black-chinned Sparrow.
The location was on the Liberty Cap trail in Colorado National
Monument (west of Grand Junction). I timed the hike on the
way back to my vehicle and it is about a 45 minute hike from
the trailhead just off of Rimrock Drive, which is the road
that goes completely through the monument on the west side.

There are no previous records for this species in Colorado, but
this is a species that is suspected to occur (possibly even breed)
in the state. I heard this bird (it was seen only as it flew away
- naked eye only) singing twice and the second time was from only
about 10 meters away. The song of this sparrow is very distinctive
and I am certain that I am not confusing it with another species.
The UTM for the location where the bird was heard is 12s 0698445

drive up the Bear Creek drainage toward Evergreen on Highway 74.
Go past the parking lot for Lair o' the Bear park. Slow down and
look for Cold Springs Gulch Road on the right. DO NOT turn there,
but just a few yards farther, park in the dirt lot for Corwina Park
on the LEFT (south) side of the road. Along the highway there are
several dirt pull-offs with No Parking signs; avoid these.
If you get to O'Fallon Park or the burg of Kittridge, you have gone too far.

Once parked, walk downstream along the dirt hiking path, cross
the "rude bridge that arched the flood," then continue another
50-100 yards or so and listen for the characteristic voice of
the Prairie Warbler. It usually sings from high in the trees between
the footpath and Bear Creek. If you get to a pond on the left and
some buildings, you have walked way too far. Please do not play a tape,
as the bird is singing plenty (as unmated males oft do), so there is
no need, and to do so would disturb the harmony of the universe.
Please stay on the path, as one can see and photograph the bird
from there, and there are those who fear that the underbrush will be trampled.

Crater Lake

Summary: Though the scenery at the parking lot for Maroon Lake may make you
wonder how much better it could possibly get, this hike is still worth it.
Follow the hikers trail that stays on the north side of Maroon Lake.
This path is well traveled and is easy to follow. It will follow along
the bottom of the valley up to Crater Lake. Not too long after hiking
you will begin to gain elevation quickly. Don't give up though, it
levels off and becomes a gentle stroll through a high altitude paradise.

Trailhead: During the heavy summer months the Maroon Bells trailhead can
only be accessed by bus. The buses run from Memorial Day until Labor Day,
daily. The first bus leaves Aspen at 8:30 am and the last bus leaves
Maroon Lake at 5:00 PM. The last bus from Aspen leaves at 4:30 pm.
Bus information can be obtained by calling the Roaring Fork Transit
Agency at 970-925-8484, or the Aspen Ranger Station at 970-925-3445.
The cost is $5 per person (round trip); and $3 for children under 16
and seniors (over 62). Tickets can be purchased in Aspen and then
the bus will pick you up there. Get off the bus when it gets to
Maroon Lake. Though unfortunate it costs money to get to Maroon Lake,
this regulation has helped immensely in keeping the area pristine,
plus the guided tour makes it worth the money.
